"Circuital" is My Morning Jacket's sixth studio album and their best so far!
The album's opening one-two salvo is alone worth the price of admission.
"Victory Dance" is the most jarring thing here, which starts off a mystifying
slow-burning jam that ebbs and flows through the dark side of the Allman
Brothers Band before morphing into a coda of singer/guitarist Jim James' howl
and a skronky guitar freak-out reminiscent of the Velvet Underground's
"European Son". The feedback of "Victory Dance" bleeds right into the album's
title track, a seven-minute Byzantine builder that begins with plucking
acoustics and buried lost-in-space keyboards and then shifts into an epic
Maximum R&B power-chord chugger. It's primo My Morning Jacket, stacking up
against some of the finest songs in their catalog. "First Light" is a power
pop song that sounds like it could be an old Beatles track. "You Wanna Freak
Out" is a rocker with some amazing guitar work. "Wonderful (The Way I Fell)"
is a ballad with a laid back groove that's infectious. "Movin Away" is a
beautiful yet slightly solemn piano ballad that closes out the album. In all,
every song on here is amazing performed with immaculate precision and I would
highly recommend this to anyone.

Before we jump into Cults, let's get one thing out of the way: this is
some seriously twee stuff. Anybody who heard the Brooklyn band's
self-released 7" on Bandcamp last year could tell you that Madeline
Follin's voice is a precious, high-pitched little thing, and that the
band's penchant for twinkling keyboards and reverb (not to mention
their fashionably un-Google-able name) practically screamed "indie pop"
in capital letters and red print. Cults can't help the fact that they
fall squarely into a genre riddled with annoying signifiers and
industry-constructed wannabes, but they can take those basic elements
that make the best '60s-inflected indie pop tick and combine them into
fantastic songs that have an uncanny ability to lodge their way firmly
into your head. That's hardly easy to do, but Cults pull it off - and
then some.
Because while Cults' songs are far from complex, they aren't simple.
The little guitar slide in "Abducted" that kicks the album into high
gear is a perfectly placed flourish executed tightly and efficiently, a
far cry from the self-consciously lazy stylings found in bands
occupying similar mid-century revivalist territory. Clever touches
abound, providing these songs with an appealingly quick pulse and just
enough bounce to be completely charming. The phrase "summer music" has
been invoked so many times with regards to this album that I'm loathe
to use it again, but this stuff just sounds sunny and breezy. All of
which makes the album's decidedly sinister touches that much more
effective. "Never Saw The Point" starts out cute enough, with Follin
singing, "I never saw the point in trying / 'cause I would only let you
down". But then she sings, in that exact same tone, "And I just
couldn't bring you down there with me / I just can't stand to see you
drown". All of a sudden, the song's lilting arrangement takes on
another dimension, suggesting recurrent anxiety instead of buoyancy.
This contrast between light and dark was found on the band's very first
single, "Go Outside", which opened with the notorious cult leader Jim
Jones intoning, "To me, death is not a fearful thing. It's living
that's treacherous." In its earlier incarnation, the quote felt a bit
like an extraneous addition for the sake of giving the band an "edge"
that befitted their name, but in context, it feels appropriate. Because
while it's a stretch to say that Cults are exploring the relationship
between life and death with their music, the delicate push-and-pull
between heartbreak and humor is a constant presence here. When they
revert to the latter mode, as Follin does when singing, "I could never
be myself, so fuck you," the result is winning. But then we have "You
Know What I Mean", a deceptively cheerful ditty filled with
uncertainty: "Help me 'cause I'm feeling shaky / tell me what's wrong
with my brain, 'cause I seem to have lost it." The sentiment is
intensified by Follin's deliberately sweet tone, which could just as
easily be interpreted as being eerily clear-eyed. There are brief
moments in Cults where a more nuanced approach to vocals would be much
appreciated (and the superb, Belle and Sebastian-esque "Bumper" hints
at how galvanizing such a development would be), but for the most part,
the singularity that Follin communicates is immediate and convincing.
It's largely due to this urgency that Cults is such a breathless and
exhilarating album, and such a fun one - for all its darker hues, this
is music that slams a smile onto your face. Listening to it, I'm
reminded of Sleigh Bells' superb Treats, not because Cults is a
particularly close sonic relative of that Brooklyn boy-girl duo's
decibel-busting pop; rather, both bands establish their aesthetic
clearly, work within its narrow boundaries, and spin aural bliss out of
it. Sure, it's a bit homogeneous, but when the songs are this good and
exciting, that's hardly a major drawback. Besides, if Cults can't win
you over with their music, they'll win you over with sheer force. As
they exhort themselves, "rave on". Who am I to disobey? -

Produced by their friend and frequent collaborator Darren Hayman of Hefner, the
album was recorded entirely live in one day at Haymanu"s house in Walthamstow.
As main man David Tattersal explains - "Weu"d been enjoying playing together
live more than ever on recent tours and simply wanted to record the band the way
it sounds these days. When you do things live, you obviously sacrifice
perfection in the hope that instead you will capture these kind of strange and
glorious spontaneous moments that musicians create together, that no one could
do on their own, and that you can only get with live performance. It was
probably the happiest record experience we have ever had."
The songs featured here embrace Tattersallu"s love of E Minor ?Now Your Smiles
Comes Over In Your Face and title track Beer In The Breakers; Bass player
Franicu"s favourite clothing brand ?Blue Harbour ?a tale of love in Coney
Island; are inspired by band favourites like Otis Rush ?Blink Back A Tear; and
include re-workings of songs written in Tattersallu"s youth ?China Whale Brand
and In Her Kitchen. The first single from the album will be Little Surprise, a
track whose upbeat melody belies its dark, poignant lyrics.

If the past is a foreign country, Miles Kane has a green card for the 1960s, so
firmly does his musical vision reside in that time. Where his work with Alex
Turner as the Last Shadow Puppets was hailed for its reimagining of Scott
Walker-style grandeur, his solo debut sees the decade through a magpie's eye.
Jaunty Motown harmonies (Quicksand) are juxtaposed with pulse-raising
rock'n'roll riffs (Come Closer) calling to mind everyone from the Stooges to the
Supremes. Kane's textures are eclectic, with string sections and slide guitars
to bolster his best crooning on the title track, and the breathy vocals of

Californian born Matthew Morrison is best known to
millions as the eternally optimistic high school teacher
and de facto glee club director, Will Schuester, on the
Channel 10's runaway hit comedy series Glee. The show

produced sophomore record 慣he Wages Of Fear?on June the 13th through
brand new home, Naim Edge Records. The first single 慡ay Silence
(Heaven & Earth)?will be released just a week before, June 5th.
After a year of writing and a whole summer of recording TELLISON
relocated to an old stately home in Scotland, got pumped on The
Weakerthans, Pedro The Lion, Osker, The GetUp Kids, Phoenix and Bruce
Springsteen records and made a mess for a month.
慣he Wages Of Fear?is the final outcome of that month. The album title
is based on the name of a French film from 1953 directed by
Henri-Georges Clouzot in which a group of desperate men trapped in a
dead-end South American town are hired by a manipulative and dishonest
oil company to complete a near suicidal task in the vain hope of
earning their passage out of the situation they find themselves in, a
situation full of horror because it presents no opportunities and no
chance of redemption.
It is an album that is filled to the brim with fun, intelligence,
melody, beauty and sadness. There are songs that leap out at you from
the start and songs that slowly grow and build, working their way into
your brain over repeated listens. Meanings behind the tracks vary
massively, but as with the album title and everything TELLISON do, they
all have meaning, a sense of purpose and a story to tell. -

Just as comedy actors, no matter how massive their crowd-draw or how
enjoyable their movies, stand a popsicle-in-HellÆs chance of ever
winning an Oscar, itÆs virtually unthinkable that the second album from
LiverpoolÆs The Wombats will grace the higher echelons of any
end-of-year polls or the Mercury shortlist. They cross too many boxes û
theyÆre shamelessly radio-friendly and insanely melodic, they have a
æwackyÆ name and theyÆre simply too popular/ist to garner much of a
credible critical vote. On the contrary, that scraping sound you can
hear is the widespread music media dragging their shovels towards This
Modern Glitch intending to bury û largely unheard and with extreme
prejudice û the leading exponents of what the trolls have deemed
"landfill indie".
And what a travesty that burial would be. Because, for its genre û
polished, uplifting, chart-bound electro indie-pop û This Modern Glitch
is a flawless modern classic to file alongside Free All Angels by Ash,
Franz FerdinandÆs debut and Hard-FiÆs Stars of CCTV. Leaning more
heavily on synth blares and funk-disco beats than their
guitar-orientated debut A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation, itÆs
like a blast of musical Optrex to the face of 2011. It revitalises the
80s electro-funk-pop revival on the stunning likes of Our Perfect
Disease (hyperactive Hurts) and Walking Disasters (morose Marina). It
invigorates Naked and Famous-esque synth-pop with jubilant harmonic
whoops and trills on 1996 and Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves). And it
re-imagines The VerveÆs Bittersweet Symphony as an anthem of defiance
against personal (rather than social) tribulations on the
string-swaddled ode to singer MurphÆs anti-depressant addiction,
Anti-D.
And thereÆs the kernel to The WombatsÆ popularity and (inevitable)
longevity. Sure, they sporadically live up to their cartoonish persona
by playing the ultimate Nuts readers on fuzz-punker Girls / Fast Cars,
or detailing a druggy night in a Hoxton trendster club on
single-of-the-decade contender Techno Fan, a song with a hook thatÆll
punch through you like a jack-hammer. Yet thereÆs dark, intriguing
depths to MurphÆs warts-and-all personal exposes that keep the songs
writhing like crawling creatures beneath the diamond dust. "Last night
I dreamt I died alone!" he wails over the Glasvegas space pomp of Last
Night I Dreamt; "We need some pop psychology to keep us upbeat," he
advocates on Walking Disasters, where two lovers find consolation in
mutual self-loathing. And when closer Schumacher the Champagne breaks
into the albumÆs all-out-metal crescendo, Murph bellows The WombatsÆ
defining, defiant statement: "Take me as I am, or not at all!"
And take them you most certainly should. Those with their tongue fast
to the perineum of the zeitgeist will balk at such brazen,
unpretentious pleasures as youÆll find here, and more fool them. The
Wombats will never have the cult kudos of a Sufjan, the culture buzz of
a Jessie J or the critical awe of an Arcade Fire or Radiohead. But for
the flagrant pop thrill-seeker û judging by this incredible,
irrepressible, ecstatic, brilliant record û neither will they ever
disappoint. DonÆt believe the anti-hype: pop album of the year, by at
least a dozen choruses.
